This hike started as another wet hike, and knowing we were hiking up to get some good views we were a little worried that all we would see would be slightly higher up clouds than those surrounding us at our campsite. Luckily it cleared up and turned out to be spectacular! Very windy, and standing on the top of some of these pinnacles was a little nerve wracking even for those of us who like such things, but it was totally worth it.
I had heard all about these 'huts' that New Zealand has in their backcountry, where people can stay instead of bringing tents along. I definitely imagined a very simple structure with maybe a few bunk beds, and maybe a stove, but the first 'hut' we saw was this one, at the Pinnacles. It had 80 bunks, a full kitchen, showers, bathrooms, and they were watering the front "lawn" with a sprinkler system! Seriously? It's like a super nice hostel in the mountains that you have to hike to. Pretty cool, but not the rustic, rugged image conjured by the term 'hut'.

| Yeah we've sort of got a thing for Hazelnut Smooth (some may know it by the other brand's name, Nutella, but I assure you, Hazelnut Smooth is just if not more delicious! Especially after a difficult hike. Ok, now you can give me my ten free jars, Pams). |
