Ok, maybe I should have a picture of my parents here, but apparently I didn't think to take that picture. I did take a picture of the three of us "kids" in the back of my parent's van. It was great to be reunited and to share stories with each other about our two weeks separated from each other.

After dropping off our rental car and getting picked up by my parents, we again headed out of Auckland as quickly as we could. This time with the goal of catching a glimpse of Mt. Ngauruhoe, otherwise known as in LOTR movie fan circles as "the mountain that they used to be Mt. Doom in the LOTR movies", or if you don't want to write or say all that out, simply "Mt. Doom." Don't worry, (Joe), I know that New Zealand isn't actually Middle Earth, but come on, when you are going to hike a volcano, isn't it more fun to call it Mt. Doom than Mt. Ngauruhoe, especially when you aren't really sure how the people here pronounce that name, so you say it like a Tanzanian would because that's the only place you've ever seen an Ng starting a place name.

Pretty iconic. |

We are going to hike up to here! |
After hiking up a little ways to get some good views we noticed a road that continued to lead upwards, and the gate happened to be open so we drove up. It ended up being a sweet, abandoned for the summer (pretty much), ski area. There was also a lot of really cool scenery and landscape up there, so we spent a lot of time in the dwindling light hiking around rocks and taking pictures. Later we found out that a lot of scenes from LOTR were filmed there, especially Mead's wall, which we were just excited about because it shares names with Dan Mead (my sister's husbands for those not in the know).

Apparently he hadn't seen this picture yet before standing on the edge of the cliff. Who could have guessed that if you fell off a cliff it would be dangerous? |
