volatile earth

Outside of Rotorua we hiked up Rainbow mountain.  The landscape in the North Island is mostly created from volcanic activity, and in some places it is more obvious than others.  Not only was the rock some cool colors, and the lakes (they were a nice emerald) but there were several areas were steam came out of the side of the mountain.

Looking out over the landscape.

After our hike to the top we went down to some mud flats, not quite Yellowstone, but pretty sweet.

Boiling mud!
