Ferry trip to the South Island

We left Wellington and the North Island behind via ferry.  I absolutely love traveling by ferry, it is especially nice when you have free wifi for when your face has been blown off.  Kelly really got into the wind, leaning forward at the front of the boat and letting the wind hold her up.  The ride isn't that long, about three hours, not much compared to some of the trips I was on while in Alaska. After we got to the south island we immediately headed inland and set up camp to prepare for an epic hike to Mt. Owen the next day.  I've heard good things about the South Island, and yes, it is all that they say and more.  The more being those pesky blood sucking black flies that people seem not to bother to warn you about.  I guess it's just something to make sure people actually leave at some point.

Goodbye Wellington!

First view of the South Island.

Aren't our colorful coats nice?

One of the first things we saw in the South Island was a forest fire!  I thought I had escaped all that!  This was a small one, started by someone burning trash behind their house, which spread to their shed that had a large fuel canister in it.  Luckily it didn't spread quickly and there was a quick response.  We camped at the site where they were filling up water, so we got to watch the whole process, which lasted about two hours or so.
